THE MATHEMATICIAN WHO PUSHED THE BOUNDARIES OF MATHEMATICS — MADHAVA OF SANGAMAGRAMA

In this session, I speak about one of Kerala’s remarkable mathematical minds — Madhava of Sangamagrama, who lived around the 14th–15th century and became a foundational figure of the Kerala School of Mathematics. Long before many of these ideas appeared in European mathematics, Madhava is credited by historians with important work on infinite series, trigonometric functions and remarkably accurate calculations of π. His work is considered an important precursor to developments in mathematical analysis. But Madhava’s story is more than history. It reminds us why mathematics must be more than a subject in a student's curriculum. Mathematics teaches us to: Think logically Question and explore Recognise patterns Solve unfamiliar problems Build patience and precision Look beyond the obvious The work of Madhava and the mathematicians who followed him shows us that Indian mathematical history has a rich tradition of curiosity, reasoning and discovery. His ideas inspired generations of mathematicians in the Kerala School, including Nilakantha Somayaji and Jyesthadeva. When we teach mathematics, let us not teach only formulas. Let us teach students to THINK. Watch the complete session with Anees Kutty Sir and discover the fascinating story of Madhava of Sangamagrama and India’s mathematical heritage. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DdV0F5lNGst/?stkn=aXY4MnltMDA1ZGg4
